Notes: | Wise Khipu B399 / T41299.34 Fragmentary khipu with two main cords and top and subsidiary cords Khipu fragment. Front end of main cord severed. Back end is broken, not knotted. Is it 2 khipu attached to each other? Can't tell because sewn down. Khipu was removed from board. Appears that the 2 main cords are sewn together by a rust brown string. Not sure when this was done. Includes 1 scrap package A = 16 fragments Primary Cord Notes Main cord = str md tn/lt tn (2 parts md tn, 1 part lt tn). Both ends broken, but sewn together with a ru-br thread (not sure if it Are two main cords attached to each other originally? Cord Notes Top cords looped around some groups of pendants. Could be many cords missing. Main cord is 2 S-plied parts. First- dark brown/light tan/blue (most dark brown dusted away). Second - 2 parts dark tan/1 part light tan. The "first" khipu has all verso cord attachments. Looks like this one may have 2 separate main cords too that are sewn together. At the "second" khipu, the main cord changes to a different color combination and has all recto pendant attachments. The orientation of the object is not known because there are no finished ends on the main cord. Could be read in either direction. Left side of khipu is in poor condition -- many broken and unattached cords. Loose ones put into a package. Should be removed from poster board -- cord is tearing where sewn down from the tension. Removed 3/30/06 by Dawn Planas and Kylie Quave. Knots are on level decimal planes within groups but not from group to group. Subsidiaries have their own decimal levels, separate from their pendants. At Group 27, there is a distinct change in knot levels-- lowered significantly. Not sure if were sewn together while in Wise collection or earlier. Group 1 top cord is total of its pendants --possible that other groups had the same, but they are damaged too much to confirm Census khipu? |
